The concept of placing these children in loving homes brought images of wilderness and wandering to mind. Mountains represent permanence and immovability. They are strong and reliable. As you can probably tell — Most of the recent mens art has been the result of sharpie to paper. This one is no different. The aesthetic result of using such a blunt tool to create illustrations is so powerful — it really does fit the concept perfectly.

Women

So many children are tossed from home to home. Without refuge or a place to rest their feet. The phrase, “Love the Lost” is a reminder to love these children. The image that comes to mind when thinking about what home meant is the tree. Tree’s provide an entire ecosystem of shelter and sustenance. The final illustration style captures the beauty and hopefulness of this charities work.

Women’s

Breast cancer is not just a problem of the poor or the uneducated. It’s every woman’s battle. The flower represents the raw beauty of a woman. The missing petals are meant to illustrate the loss that occurs as a woman battles this terrible disease. Even so, the flower is still beautiful. Even through the battle, through loss and struggle we want women to know that they are beautiful. This piece was a labor of love and it is my hope that this story is one you can be proud of.

Men’s

The issue of breast cancer is different for men. Men have to deal with it through loved ones and friends. The bull has been a symbol of assistance to mankind over the centuries. It is a guardian. Often placed at gates and entryways. It it our goal to see men stand up along side women to help protect them from this enemy that robs us all. I wanted the bull to feel like it is charging forward. Bold, unafraid of what lies ahead. Ready to face this issue head on.

Men’s Art

When it comes to powerful issues like child trafficking I look for imagery that will get people’s attention. This piece is no different. A tiger roaring out the word Freedom is a powerful image and a rallying cry for us to stand up for the helpless. This illustration and lettering were done in sharpie, which was a blast. Creating understandable art with only a blunt marker is a challenge but the end result is honest and compelling.

Women’s Art

Historically the Indian dreamcatcher was believed to capture bad dreams in the netting while only permitting the good ones to pass through via a small hole in the center. This icon really fit the story as I thought about Gems. They are giving these women the opportunity to dream great things again as they are freed from slavery. The final piece is a delicately hand drawn illustration using ink on paper.

While we thought about this phrase we thought a lot about our responsibility to stand up for the hungry and the less fortunate. The phrase, “Strong for the Hungry” resonated with us while we brainstormed the artwork. The iconic image of the flexed muscle is the obvious representations of strength but we wanted to represent the message in the style of illustration by using bold lines and heavy shapes. The final result is loaded with character and a heavy human touch that helps connect us to the people we are helping.

It’s not every day that you get to combine roses, antlers and a beautiful script together for T-shirt art so I was thrilled when we came up with this combination. We really wanted to design to have an elegance and strength about it that would appeal to women and enhance the message. For instance, the stag horns represent strength and fortitude. We placed these in contrast to the roses which represent passion and beauty.

ART WITH A MESSAGE

As a designer for Sevenly, I am challenged each week to create art that successfully reinforces a message that impacts lives. This week’s design features a bird and the phrase, “Love Starts Now”. While we considered the work of End7 we realized that END7 is liberating people from these horrible diseases. We took some time to think about possible visual representations of freedom.

For the women’s shirt I illustrated a delicate and beautiful figure of a sparrow. It represents freedom because of it’s envied liberty to come and go. In art it represents hope, love and loyalty. I really wanted this design to be elegant and I think it turned out really great.

The men’s shirt is a bold take on this concept. It shows a powerful eagle taking flight from its perch. The eagle is ideal because it represents freedom, strength and justice. The illustration style is taken from many classic book and tattoo illustrations. I spent a lot of time sketching illustration and re-illustrating this piece to get it just right. You’d be surprised at how much work it is to create something that looks so rough. Either way, I love the way it turned out in the end.
