There was singing and dancing in the hospital room after Loic came out of surgery. He sat on the bed with his legs in hard casts stretching out in front of him, while his mom joined a roomful of doctors and nurses clapping and singing a traditional African song. The joy in the room starkly contrasted the tension only moments before, when Loic’s mom released her son’s hand and waited to hear if he would be able to walk and run again.
"Seek joy in what you give, not in what you get." Such a simple phrase that many of us will gladly copy and paste into our Facebook feed in an attempt to look deep, caring, and artsy. (Come on. We’ve all done it!) But, here is the question… What does it truly mean to live this? Or better yet, how do we make this phrase our "life’s mission"?
I can guarantee you from first hand experience, that selflessness doesn’t magically occur. In fact, it completely goes against our human nature. We are born selfish and the desire for ‘more’ only grows as we age. So how do we break this? It all lies in one area of your life.
The choice to live out of love, or to give to those in need. The choice to put yourself second and think of others as greater! Now, I know that some of you are thinking “The root of the problem is in the heart, choices come after.” Let me be the first to get real with you and let you know that more often than not, my heart tells my mind to pretend that the $20 bill in my pocket does not exist as I walk past a woman and child in need. It is my discipline in choices that enable me to bless that woman and her child in a way that she never expected. The more that we discipline ourselves through choices, our hearts will follow in suit.
Live > Love > Be Selfless
